Unusual Voting Circumstances
Provisional Voting
The provisional ballot has the same candidates and referenda as
a regular ballot. It is designated by its color and the words
"Provisional Ballot" at the top of the ballot. The provisional
ballot is given to voters;
- whose registration record is not available at the polls,
- who did not present identification at the polls when required,
due to mail registration, or
- who, due to a court ordered extension of voting hours, voted
after 7:00 p.m. The election code allows two weeks for the election
authority to determine whether the provisional ballots should be
counted. The valid provisional ballots are then added to the
Election Day count.

his or her provisional ballot was counted.

KEY to reasons a ballot would not be
counted:
A. No proof of registration.
B. Ballot was cast in the wrong precinct based on the address
provided on the provisional affidavit.
C. Ballot was cast in wrong jurisdiction based on the address
provided on the provisional affidavit.
D. The provisional affidavit was not correctly executed.
E. Already voted.
F. Pursuant to Section 18A-15 of the Illinois Election Code, you
are deemed not to be a registered voter.
G. Changed address without notifying the Election Office within
the allotted amount of time.
H. No identification provided.
I. No affidavit was completed.
J. No application was completed.
